A Transforming Life

Date: April 18, 2009
Speaker: Pastor Jasmine Poon

Title: A Transforming Life
Text: Romans 8:9-17
Series/Event: iBelieve –Post Easter Service

1. I have the power (v9-11)
“You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.”

• Philippians 2:13
“or it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.”

- Depend on Him for everything.

• Jonah 4:1-4
“But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry. He prayed to the LORD, "O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. Now, O LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live." But the LORD replied, "Have you any right to be angry?"”

• Mark 11:22-24
“"Have faith in God," Jesus answered. "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

• John 4:23-24
“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."”

-Walk closely with the Holy Sprit.

2. I have the responsibility (v12-13)
“Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live”

Our responsibilities always = God’s intervention.
100% Man, 100% God.

- Privileges comes with responsibility.

• James 4:8
“Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

• Philippians 2:12-13
“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.”

Every choice you make today, determines your tomorrow.

3. I have the privilege (v14-17)
“because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”

(a)A New Identity

The Greek word for Father is “Pater”.
The Aramaic word for Father is “Abba”.

• Galatians 4:6
“Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father."”

(b)A New Inheritance

• Revelation 22:17
“The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.”

• Matthew 5:12a
“Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

The Cross of Righteousness

Date: April 04, 2009
Speaker: Pastor Jasmine Poon

Title: The Cross of Righteousness
Text: Romans 3:21-25
Series: Cross Series

1. God’s Reveals His Righteousness to Us (v21)
“But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago.”[NLT]

“has been made known”[NIV]

• Romans 7:12
“So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.”

• Galatians 2:21
“I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!"”

Believers should be the most overcoming people on this earth.

If Christianity was about following the Law, One would lead a miserable life.

-The Cross represents God’s absolute moral standard.

2. God’s Righteousness is for All to Receive (v22-23)
“We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.”[NLT]

“all who believes”, “all have sinned” [NIV]

• Romans 3:10
“As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one”

King David
David wrote this song (Ps 51:4) after committing adultery and murder. He realised that he was not “the king” but there was a KING above him.

• Psalms 51:4
“Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.”

3. Righteousness is Provided to Us Who Believes (v22,25)
(v22)“We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.”[NLT]

(v25)“For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past”[NLT]

“all who believes” [NIV]

Paul reminds the believers not to go back to the Mosaic Law.

The Greek word for Justified is “Dikaioo” which means: “To declare the righteousness of something or someone”

• Romans 5:9
“Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him!”

• Ephesians 2:8-9
“ For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.

What prevents us from believing?

I. Pride

i , me and myself
Acknowledge the CROSS instead.

II. Doubt
“a feeling of uncertainty.”

How to Get Rid of Pride and Doubt?

(a) Acknowledge

-that Jesus is our only Saviour
• Romans 5:9
“Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him!”

(b) Confess

-Even Satan believes that Jesus is the son of God (Matt 4:1 – “If you are the Son of God”) but he does not want to turn away from his sinful way.
• 1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

(c) Commit

-re-submitting our lives to God.
• 2 chronicles 30:8
“Do not be stiff-necked, as your fathers were; submit to the LORD. Come to the sanctuary, which he has consecrated forever. Serve the LORD your God, so that his fierce anger will turn away from you.”
